THE BARE BONES... (a brief overview)
While on her tea break in Melbourne Australia, teaching her night tafe photography course, Kim Leamy is approached by a stranger who thinks she is a child who disappeared twenty eight years earlier on the other side of the globe. At first Kim dismisses his claims but after doing some investigation of her own ends up travelling to Pennsylvania to research whether there could be any truth in his bizarre allegation. As her history unravels, so does the story of Sammy Went who has not been seen since she was two years old.
The Nowhere Child is carefully crafted, just as you think you understand what actually happened, new evidence is introduced, or old evidence is suddenly relevant. Dual storylines- then and now- track you through messy relationships, lies and guilt with the life of a two-year-old in the balance. With more twists than a boerewors sausage, this book earns its place in the shortlist of for debut fiction in the 2019 Indie Awards.

FLAVOURS OF... (other books like this one)
In the acknowledgements the author credits Stephen King in the development of his writing style. This book keenly mirrors King’s nail-biting narrative. The way the descriptions of the landscape are entwined with the character and plot development reminds me of ‘Scrublands’. The domestic suspense reminds me of ‘Half Moon Lake’.

SNAGS ON THE BARBIE (rating out of 5)
4 out of 5 snags. The masculine tone of this book might not appeal to all, like a thick Pork Loin Chop with southern slaw, some of the graphic violence and depiction of cult practices are hard to digest. For those with a strong stomach, however, the book will be savoured and remembered fondly.
“Were Jack and Molly Went still waiting for answers? Did every photo call or knock at the door fill them with hope of dread or some bitter mixture of both? Did they see Sammy’s face in every woman they passed on the street, or had they found a way to move on?”

I DO think it is book that will only appeal to some. The cult references were quite graphic... are you in the mood for something lighter? Kayte Nunn has a new book out, “the forgotten letters of Esther Durrant” which I’m about to begin (historical/ contemporary chick lit). If you haven’t read Kelly Rimmer’s “the things we cannot say” you need to check that out! If you’d like to delve into more crime-ish whodunnit you should check out The Ruin... Thanks for your comments!
I've just finished reading this, and to be honest, I can't say I loved it. I found the storyline intriguing at first and was keen to keep turning the page to find out what happened. At about the half-way mark, I found the story line became more ane more far fetched and there were just a few too many massive plot twists. Needless to say, I wanted to discover how it ended so kept going with it. It's an easy, fast paced read. Now, what to read next?
I enjoy reading your reviews, however my dreams are scary enough without adding fuel to the fire. Thanks
